MacBook fans have long been waiting for Apple to unveil a touchscreen variant. A new rumour emerging from a South Korean forum suggests that its arrival may be closer than expected, as OLED panels tipped for the touchscreen MacBook Pro are said to have entered mass production this month.
Touchscreen MacBook Pro OLED panels enter production phase
According to the report, Samsung Display has begun mass production of 8.6-generation OLED panels, and Apple’s next MacBook Pro is expected to be among the first devices to use them. What makes this development notable is that mass production was earlier expected to begin in the second quarter of this year.
If production has indeed started ahead of schedule, the touchscreen MacBook Pro could arrive sooner than previously anticipated.
That said, readers should note that the source sharing this information has a mixed track record for accuracy. As such, it is advisable to treat this update with a pinch of salt.
As mentioned earlier, the rumoured device could become Apple’s first touch-enabled MacBook Pro, likely aimed at professionals who rely on touch-based workflows. Technical details remain under wraps, but the laptop is expected to feature next-generation M6-series processors, specifically the M6 Pro and M6 Max.
MacBook models have largely retained the same design language since 2021. The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to introduce visible changes, potentially replacing the current display notch with a Dynamic Island-style cutout. It is also tipped to be thinner and lighter than previous generations.
Expected launch timeframe
Apple is yet to launch MacBook Pro models powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These devices, as well as the M5 MacBook Air is expected to launch in the first half of this year.
As a result, OLED-equipped MacBook Pro models are expected to arrive several months after those launches. This points to a possible 2027 first half debut for the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro, despite panel production reportedly beginning now.
