Apple is said to be working on a major camera upgrade for future iPhones. A new leak suggests internal testing of a high-resolution 200MP sensor, indicating a shift in its long-standing imaging approach. While nothing is confirmed yet, the development points to a possible change in strategy for upcoming models.
Apple said to be testing 200MP sensor
According to Digital Chat Station, Apple is evaluating a 200MP camera sensor that could appear as early as next year. The sensor under consideration is said to be around 1/1.12-inch in size, which is larger than what Apple currently uses in its Pro iPhones. This size increase is significant because it allows more light to be captured, helping maintain image quality despite the higher pixel count.
There are mixed signals about where this sensor could be placed. Some reports suggest it may be tested for the telephoto camera, while others indicate it could be used as a primary sensor. The approach appears similar to what brands like Oppo are expected to introduce with upcoming flagship devices, where large sensors are paired with high-resolution imaging.
Balancing resolution with real-world performance
Apple has traditionally avoided chasing higher megapixel numbers and instead focused on image processing and consistency. Current models rely on 48MP sensors, which already offer detailed output through pixel binning. Moving to 200MP would significantly increase the amount of image data, allowing more flexibility in cropping and zoom without losing clarity.
However, higher resolution also brings challenges, especially in low-light conditions where smaller pixels can introduce noise. A larger sensor helps offset this limitation, which explains Apple’s reported focus on increasing sensor size alongside resolution. Brands like Samsung Electronics have already implemented 200MP cameras in flagship devices, but Apple seems to be taking a more measured approach.
At present, the technology is still under evaluation, and timelines remain uncertain, with some earlier reports pointing towards a later launch window.
