Recent leaks suggest that iPhone 18 Pro may not bring the major front design overhaul many were expecting. While earlier reports hinted at a near full-screen experience, fresh information indicates Apple could take a more gradual approach. This comes as the company continues working on placing Face ID components beneath the display.
Dynamic Island may stay, but with a refined design
According to a Chinese tipster, Apple is facing technical hurdles in integrating the Face ID sensor array under the screen. The system relies on multiple components working together with precision, and ensuring accuracy through an active display layer appears to be more complex than anticipated.
Products in focus
As a result, the company may retain the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models. However, this does not mean there will be no changes. The current expectation is that Apple will reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, making it less intrusive while still retaining its functionality.
This approach allows Apple to maintain features such as live activities and system alerts, which have become a key part of the iOS experience. Reports also suggest that the front design may remain largely similar to current-generation models, indicating an iterative update rather than a complete shift.
Under-display Face ID still in development
Apple’s long-term goal of achieving a seamless, uninterrupted display is still very much in progress. The challenge lies in ensuring that Face ID remains fast and reliable even when placed beneath the screen, without compromising security or performance. At this stage, the technology does not appear ready for mass production at Apple’s standards.
Interestingly, while the traditional iPhone design sees incremental refinement, rumours around Apple’s foldable iPhone are gaining traction. Supply chain chatter hints at a more aggressively positioned foldable device, which could arrive alongside future flagship models.
For now, the idea of a completely notch-free iPhone seems a few generations away, with Apple choosing refinement over risk.
