Future Tata EV cars could be unlocked with an iPhone, Apple Watch

Remember that scene in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation where Tom Cruise unlocked a car by just tapping on the window? You will soon be able to do it too. Well, sort of.

A couple of years ago, Apple introduced a digital car key feature in its Wallet app. This feature lets users lock, unlock or even start a car (if compatible) with just an iPhone or an Apple Watch.

In the years since, Apple has partnered with a host of car brands to offer this feature. And if the WWDC 2025 announcement is anything to go by, this feature is now coming to even more car makers, including an Indian brand.

Apple digital car key feature in Tata EV cars

Eagle eyed users will have noticed that during the keynote address, Apple announced that digital car key feature will be rolling out to 13 new brands, including Tata EV. There’s however no word on a roll out timeline or which Tata car model will be the first to offer this feature.

Besides Tata EV, the other new car brands partnering with Apple include Acura, Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Porsche, Rivian, Smart, Lucid Motors, Hongqi, WEY, Chery, and Voyah. They join existing car makers like Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, among a few others.

What is the Apple digital car key feature?

As the name suggests, this feature allows users to unlock their car with an NFC-enabled Apple Watch or an Apple iPhone. Basically, a digital version of the key is store in Apple Wallet, and the car will detect it when you get close or tap the device on the door handle.

Those worried about security need not fret as the unlocking feature can be further protected by Face ID. There’s also a built-in Express Mode, which bypasses the authentication to quickly unlock the car.

What do you think about this new upcoming feature? What car model are you most excited to see this feature in? Let us know in the comments below.
