How to change system font in Windows 10: Simple step-by-step guide

If you’re struggling to figure out how to change the system font in Windows 10, you’re not alone. The default font Windows 10 uses is fine for most people, but it doesn’t always match everyone’s style. Since the system font shows up in menus, settings pages, title bars, and even file names, changing it can make your whole desktop feel a bit more “you.” So, if you’re ready to tweak the look of your desktop or laptop, here’s an easy step-by-step guide to changing the system font in Windows 10.

How to change the system font in Windows 10

Windows 10 uses Segoe UI as its default system font, and it works well for most people. Still, if you prefer a different look or want something that feels easier on your eyes, you can change it out for a font that fits your style.

You can’t change the system font in Windows 10 via the built-in options and the only way to change the system font in Windows 10 is through a quick registry edit. Here’s how you can quickly change fonts in Windows 10:

Step 1: Find the official name of your new font

First, you need the exact name of the font you want to use. Open the Start menu and search for Settings, then go to “Personalization” and select “Fonts” on the left. Click the font you want, and note the official name displayed at the top of the page.

Step 2: Create a registry file

Since Windows doesn’t offer a direct system font switcher, you’ll need to create a small registry file. Open the Start menu and search for Notepad, then simply copy and paste the following code into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts]

“Segoe UI (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Light (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)”=””

“Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)”=””

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

“Segoe UI”=”NEW-FONT”

Make sure to replace NEW-FONT with the exact name you noted earlier, keeping the quotation marks. Now go to File > Save As, name the file anything you like, but end the file name with .reg (for example, myfont.reg) extension. Then, simply set the save type to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find.
