How to turn your iPhone’s camera grid on or off

When it comes to mobile photography, the iPhone is easily one of the best choices out there. Beyond its advanced camera system with powerful sensors and image processing, the straightforward controls and clever software make it easy to capture great shots. All you need to do is open the Camera app, tap the shutter button, and let the iPhone handle the rest, delivering a well-balanced shot without any extra work. But if you want more control over your composition, features like the camera grid can help.

These grid lines aren’t found directly in the Camera app but can be enabled in your iPhone settings to help you position subjects more naturally for a professional-looking shot. If you want to turn the camera grid on or off, here’s how to do it in just a few taps.

How to enable the camera grid on your iPhone

You won’t find the option to enable camera grid lines in the iPhone Camera app itself as it’s tucked away in your iPhone’s Settings. These grid lines might seem like a small feature, but they can make a big difference in how your photos turn out.

By dividing your screen into nine equal sections, grid lines help you follow the rule of thirds, which is a simple yet effective way to improve composition. Whether you’re trying to perfectly centre your subject or align the horizon, the grid makes it easier to frame your shots like a pro. Here’s how to quickly turn on (or off) the camera grid lines on your iPhone:

1. Open Settings and go to Camera

This is where you can adjust various camera features to fine-tune your photography.

2. Scroll down to the Composition section and toggle grid on or off

Turning it on will overlay faint grid lines on your Camera app to help with alignment while turning it off removes them.

3. Open the Camera app to check your changes

Once enabled, you’ll see horizontal and vertical lines forming a guide on your screen. If turned off, your camera view will be clear of any grid lines.

Right below the grid setting, you’ll also find the Level option. When turned on, it adds a floating line in the centre of your screen that helps keep your phone straight, which is great for overhead shots or making sure your horizon is perfectly aligned.

If you don’t need it, you can disable it the same way. Now, whether you prefer extra guidance for better composition or a clutter-free camera view, you can easily switch the grid and level tools on or off anytime. And don’t worry, these lines are just visual guides and won’t appear in your actual photos or videos.
