Until recently updating your AirPods had been an automatic process, and users had no manual control over updating their AirPods, like they do with iPhones, iPads, MacBooks or most other Apple products.
However, Apple has now officially revealed a new process that you can use to manually update your AirPods, AirPods Pro or even a pair of AirPods Max, provided a newer firmware is available. Here’s how to do it.
How to update your AirPods to the latest firmware
1. Make sure that your AirPods are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
2. Put your AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
3. Plug the charging cable into your charging case, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
4. Keep the lid of the charging case closed, and wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
5. Open the lid of the charging case to reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
6. Check the firmware version again.

If you still can’t update your firmware, you can try to reset your AirPods, then try to update your firmware again.
To reset your AirPods, put them in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds. On an iPhone that’s paired with your AirPods, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Tap the ‘More Info’ button next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
How to update AirPods Max to the latest firmware
You can use a similar method to update the firmware on your AirPods Max headphones.
1. Make sure that your AirPods Max are in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
2. Plug the charging cable into the bottom-right earphone, then plug the other end of the cable into a USB charger or port.
3. Wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update.
4. Reconnect your AirPods Max to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
5. Check the firmware version again.
