Apple released iOS 26.4 update last week, and it brings various new features to compatible iPhones. But also an issue. Battery drain issues are common in the days immediately after installing a software update. This is a pattern that Apple has also acknowledged and stated that it is normal. So if you have updated your iPhone to the latest iOS 26.4 update and are experiencing battery drain issues, then there is nothing to worry about.
Apple‘s support page states that temporary battery dips are common after major updates. This is because devices undergo intensive background processes immediately after an update. It can impact the battery life as well as the thermal performance. But if you’re still worried about the battery drain, here are some tips for you.
Give your iPhone time to settle
Once users download and install iOS 26.4, the iPhone starts indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps. These processes are resource-intensive and can result in faster battery depletion during the first few hours or even for a few days.
Apple ensures that this is not a long-term battery-drain issue. The concern resolves on its own without any intervention as the system settles.
Reduce background activity
Aggressive background refresh means apps constantly fetch data in the background and consume power even when not in use. These can be social media, email, ride-hailing services, etc. You can find apps that consume excessive power by heading to Settings > Battery.
To disable background refresh, go to Settings > General > Background Refresh.
Limit location services
Features like continuous GPS tracking for navigation, certain apps, and weather updates can put a strain on the phone’s battery. Users can limit access to only essential apps and switch to ‘while using’ instead of ‘always’.

Users can disable location by opening Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services
Adjusting display and connectivity settings
Reducing screen brightness and turning off unused features like AirDrop and Bluetooth can help conserve power. Keeping auto-brightness on adjusts the screen brightness depending on the ambient lighting.
Switch SIM networks
5G connectivity can be a silent battery killer depending on how and where you use it. The network uses more power than 4G LTE due to higher streaming resolution, faster downloads, and background syncing. Additionally, poor coverage areas forces the iPhone’s modem to switch between 5G and 4G.
To manage this, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data options > Voice and Data > Choose network of your choice.
In most cases, battery life stablises after a few days of installing a new software update. However, users may need to review settings if the issue persists. They may need to consider a hard reset as the last resort.
