Lean code, boosted battery life

Apple may be planning to boost iPhone battery life with iOS 27

Apple’s next big iPhone update may be less about flashy visuals and more about housekeeping. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 27 is shaping up to focus heavily on codebase cleanup, with the aim of improving battery life and overall efficiency across compatible iPhones.

The iOS 27 update is expected to land later this year, likely alongside the rumoured iPhone 18 Pro line-up and Apple’s long-whispered foldable iPhone. While Apple has yet to confirm anything publicly, early reports suggest that iOS 27 could deliver meaningful under-the-hood gains rather than headline-grabbing redesigns.

iOS 27: An upgrade to boost iPhone endurance

Instead of another sweeping visual overhaul, Apple is reportedly planning to “tidy up” iOS 27 at a foundational level. That means stripping out remnants of older code written for previous iOS versions, rewriting certain features, and subtly updating core apps.

The goal, first and foremost, is to make the operating system more efficient. A leaner codebase can reduce unnecessary background processes, improve responsiveness and, crucially, squeeze more endurance out of the same battery hardware. Engineers are said to be aiming for a system that feels snappier in day-to-day use without necessarily looking dramatically different.

There may be some interface tweaks, but not on the scale of iOS 26’s Liquid Glass design shift. This time, battery life and performance appear to be the focus.

iOS 27: AI still on the agenda

Efficiency is only one part of the story. Apple’s long-delayed AI-powered Siri revamp is also expected to play a role in iOS 27. First teased at WWDC 2024, the upgraded assistant has reportedly been in development for nearly two years.

Some of the new AI features could arrive earlier with iOS 26.5, while others may be held back for iOS 27. The plan, according to reports, is to deepen system-wide AI integration rather than bolt on isolated tools. That suggests tighter links between apps, more contextual responses from Siri, and potentially smarter on-device processing.

The timing, however, remains fluid. The new Siri was previously tipped for an earlier rollout before being pushed back, and Apple has not officially confirmed its release window.

Smarter Siri aside, if the reports hold true, iOS 27 could be one of those updates that makes daily life with an iPhone noticeably smoother. Longer battery life and a more responsive system are not glamorous upgrades, but they are the kind most people will appreciate by 7PM on a long day.
