iPhone 14 to Apple Watch Ultra: Everything announced at Apple’s ‘Far Out’ event

It’s that time of the year again when all eyes are peeled on the grand Steve Jobs Theatre, and again Apple hasn’t disappointed. The packed keynote address had everything from new tech advances to the much-awaited unveiling of new Apple products.

In line with all the rumours, the Cupertino-based giant did announce a bunch of new iPhones –iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Additionally, we also saw the launch of the brand-new Apple Watch Ultra and the next-gen Apple AirPods Pro. For your convenience, here’s a roundup of everything announced at Apple’s 2022 Far Out event.

Apple iPhones

iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus: The new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus look like last year’s iPhone 13 series, and are powered by last year’s six-core A15 Bionic chip as well. Where the iPhone 14 sticks with the 6.1-inch screen, the new Plus variant opts for a larger 6.7-inch screen.

For photography, there’s a new 12-megapixel primary camera with ƒ/1.5 aperture and sensor-based stabilisation, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens with ƒ/2.4 aperture and 120-degrees field of view. Up front, is a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera now with autofocus.

Both devices will come in Midnight, Purple, Starlight, Blue and Product Red colours. Prices for the iPhone 14 starts from Rs 79,900, and Rs 89,900 for the iPhone 14 Plus. Pre-orders start from September 9 at 5:30 PM IST. The iPhone 14 will be available starting September 16, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available from October 7.

Apple iPhone 14

iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max: The real innovations were reserved for the two new iPhone 14 Pro models, starting with the pill-shaped notch that can adjust dynamically. Through clever animations, notifications and other alerts seem to pop out of the notch. Apple calls this system ‘Dynamic Island’, and it is the first big evolution of the notch since its introduction on the iPhone X back in 2017.

Though the screen sizes remain the same (6.1-inch and 6.7-inch respectively), the new innovation is the introduction of the Always-On display. The display essentially dims to only display a darken version of your lockscreen wallpaper, and other relevant information like reminders, weather and calendar events.

Under the hood is a new A16 Bionic chip, which Apple claims is up to 40% faster than what competitors offer. The camera system on the Pro models has also undergone a big change with the introduction of 48-megapixel lens.

The sensor uses ƒ/1.8 aperture, 24mm focal length and quad-pixel sensor to offer up to 2x improvements to low-light photography. Apple also claims to have improved the 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens for better macro and low-light images. Those who love shooting videos will enjoy the added stability courtesy of Action Mode, and support for 4K resolution at up to 24fps in Cinematic Mode.

The Pro models will be available in Deep Purple, Silver, Gold and Space Black colours. Prices for the iPhone 14 Pro start from Rs 1,29,900, and Rs 1,39,900 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Pre-orders kick off on September 9, and both devices will be available from September 16.

Apple Watch Series 8

Apple Watches

Apple Watch Series 8: The Series 8 Watch isn’t a big evolution over its predecessor, but it does get a new temperature sensor, which Apple says, “takes its commitment to women’s health even further.” This new sensor can track temperature changes as slight as 0.1-degree Celsius, and helps in better tracking women’s menstruation and ovulation cycles.

The smartwatch also includes a pair of new motion sensors that work together to detect if you’ve been in a severe car crash. In case of such a scenario, the Watch will automatically alert the emergency services.

The Apple Watch Series 8 comes in a handful of colours with aluminium and stainless-steel finishes. There are two sizes on offer – 41mm and 45mm, and they are compatible with previous bands. Prices for the Series 8 watches start from Rs 45,900, and they will be available from September 16.

Apple Watch SE: Apple also announced the next-gen Watch SE, which is now 20% faster than its predecessor, courtesy of the S8 chipset. This is the same chipset that powers the Series 8 watches. Despite being the entry-level model, it gets the crash detection feature, but misses out on the temperature sensors.

Besides these, the Watch also comes with a Retina OLED display, heart-rate sensor, sleep tracking, fall detection, and water resistance up to 50 metres. The Watch SE comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes Starlight, Midnight and Silver finishes. Prices start from Rs 29,900, and it will be available from September 16.

Apple Watch Ultra: Apple’s Watch series gets a huge update with the launch of the Watch Ultra – a top-of-the-line rugged smartwatch for serious outdoor athletes and explorers. It features a new design with a 49mm case, bigger display with 2,000 nits of brightness, and a new Action button. There are also three new bands for the Watch – Alpine, Trail and Ocean – catering to specific outdoor activities.

The Watch Ultra also has improved cellular capabilities in order to work in the wild, and a battery life that can last up to 60 hours with low-power setting enabled. Taking on the likes of Garmin, this Watch also supports improved multiband GPS, which includes the new L5 frequency. For water sports, the Watch has a WR 100 water resistance, and is EN 13319 certified for scuba divers with a diving depth of up to 40 metres.

The Apple Watch Ultra is priced at Rs 89,900, and will be available starting September 23.

Lastly, we also saw the launch of the next-gen Apple AirPods Pro, which is powered by a new H2 chipset. This chip promises to offer improved sound quality and noise cancellation. In addition to cancelling up to twice as much noise as compared to before, Apple also claims that the new buds have an improved Adaptive Transparency mode.

The stems of the earbuds too have been improved, and now support swipes. So for instance, one can swipe up or down to adjust the volume. Battery life too has been improved with six hours on offer on a single charge. Speaking of charging, the AirPods case can now be charged using an Apple Watch charger, in addition to the standard Lightning Cable or Qi wireless charger.
