While the iPhone screen real estate has considerably increased over the past few years, it has been sporting a display notch, which not only houses the selfie camera but also complex sensors for 3D facial recognition. A new leak suggests that the iPhone 18 will be Apple’s first phone to offer a truly full-screen experience, as it will not have a display notch.
iPhone 18 series reportedly enter testing phase
According to tipster Smart Pikachu, the iPhone 18 series has now entered testing for an under-display 3D Face ID system, marking a major shift to a true full-screen design. Apple is reportedly using spliced micro-transparent glass as part of the display structure to enable the sensors to function beneath the screen.
According to the tipster, this development is pushing the supply chain to speed up preparations, suggesting Apple is moving aggressively toward eliminating the Dynamic Island (display notch) by 2026. The new leak aligns with some of the recent reports that have claimed that the iPhone 18 series will have an under-display selfie camera.
Apple will not be the first brand to offer an under-display selfie camera. Samsung has been offering this kind of camera on its foldable phones since 2021. Even before that, Chinese brand ZTE has been consistently launching phones with under-display cameras since 2020. However, when Apple adopts it, this trend may trigger other brands to offer phones with under-display cameras.
iPhone 18 series launch timeframe (expected)
Speaking of the iPhone 18 series, it is speculated that Apple’s September 2026 launch event will see the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable phone. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and the iPhone Air 2 may debut in March 2027. Reports also claim that since the year 2027 marks the company’s 20th anniversary, the brand will skip the iPhone 19 branding and use the iPhone 20 moniker.
