Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, currently codenamed Project Helix, could arrive with a much steeper price tag than previous consoles if recent leaks are accurate. The new console has been described by Microsoft as a PC–console hybrid capable of playing both Xbox and PC games natively.
If the rumours hold true, Helix may actually represent a shift in how Microsoft approaches the console market, prioritising performance and flexibility over traditional console pricing.
A premium console with a premium price
Speaking in a recent livestream, industry leaker, Moore’s Law is Dead, suggested that Microsoft may position Project Helix as a high-end device rather than a mass-market console.
According to the leaker, the company could target roughly $999 (around Rs 92,300) if priced aggressively, but the more realistic scenario places it closer to $1,200 (around Rs 1,10,800), with an upper bound of around $1,500 (around Rs 1,38,500) depending on component costs.

That would be a sharp jump from the current generation. When the Xbox Series X launched in 2020, it carried a price of $499.99 (around Rs 46,000), while the PlayStation 5 debuted at the same price.
Since then, inflation and rising component costs have pushed prices higher, with current models retailing for roughly $650 (approx. Rs 60,000) for the Series X and $550 (approx. Rs 50,700) for the PS5 in some markets.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, who recently confirmed the Project Helix codename, has already hinted that the next Xbox will target the premium end of the market. According to Sharma, the upcoming console will aim to “lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games”.
If the leak proves accurate, Microsoft’s strategy could differ significantly from Sony’s approach to the next generation. Moore’s Law is Dead suggested Sony may take a PS4-style strategy with the PlayStation 6, focusing on broader accessibility, while Microsoft may lean into a powerful hybrid platform that blurs the line between PC and console.
Rising hardware costs are also shaping the next console cycle. Demand for memory, storage, and GPUs driven by AI workloads has pushed component prices higher across the industry. That pressure could ultimately influence the pricing of both the next Xbox and the PlayStation 6, whichever company launches first.
As for timing, nothing is locked in yet. Earlier reports pointed to a 2027 window for the next console generation, but more recent rumours suggest timelines could slip. Some reports claim the PS6 may not arrive until 2029, and Microsoft itself is reportedly not fully committed internally to a 2027 launch for its next Xbox.
For now, Project Helix remains an intriguing idea. A high-powered Xbox that behaves a little more like a gaming PC. If the pricing rumours turn out to be accurate, however, the next Xbox could test just how much players are willing to pay for that vision.
