OpenAI and Jony Ive could to be working on an AI-powered pen

A new leak suggests that OpenAI and Jony Ive may be working on a pen-shaped AI gadget alongside other compact devices. While the company has not confirmed anything publicly, the claims offer early clues about how OpenAI could translate its AI capabilities into everyday hardware.

What the leak reveals about the mysterious AI device

According to information shared by tipster Smart Pikachu on X, OpenAI’s internal hardware effort is said to carry the codename “Gumdrop”. The project has reportedly entered an advanced supply chain discussion phase, with vendors evaluating three separate device concepts.

One of these is described as an AI-powered pen, while another is referred to as a portable audio-focused device designed for use on the move. A third product is also believed to be under consideration, though its exact nature remains undisclosed.

The leak also sheds light on manufacturing decisions. The project was initially associated with Luxshare, a firm known for assembling components for major technology brands. However, concerns over manufacturing location are said to have prompted OpenAI to explore alternatives.

Production is now reportedly shifting towards Foxconn, with Vietnam emerging as the preferred manufacturing base. There are also discussions around possible production at Foxconn facilities in the US, indicating a broader rethink of the supply chain.

How this aligns with OpenAI’s broader hardware ambitions

These developments echo earlier comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has previously described the company’s first hardware product as a “third core device” to sit alongside a laptop and smartphone. Ive has also hinted that a working prototype already exists, with a possible launch timeline of under two years.

Although details about features and user experience remain scarce, a pen-like AI device suggests a focus on natural input methods such as writing, voice, or context-aware assistance. Given the lukewarm response to recent standalone AI gadgets, OpenAI appears to be taking a cautious, experimental approach as it shapes what could be its first major step into consumer hardware.
