OpenAI’s Sora app to shut down as focus shifts to coding and enterprise

OpenAI’s Sora app, which debuted last year as its first standalone video-generation platform, is now being phased out. The development, confirmed via Sora’s X account and backed by fresh reports, points to a broader shift in the company’s priorities.

Sora app shutdown confirmed

In a post on X, the Sora team said, “We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app,” while thanking users for creating and sharing content on the platform. It added that more details on timelines, API access, and methods for preserving user-generated work will be shared soon.

The standalone app, which allowed users to generate and remix AI videos, had gained early traction after launch. However, concerns around copyright, misuse of likenesses, and misinformation emerged soon after, putting the platform under scrutiny.

Strategic shift towards enterprise and AI tools

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is discontinuing not just the Sora app but also its developer API and video capabilities within ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman reportedly informed employees about winding down video-focused products as part of a larger reset.

The company is now redirecting resources towards enterprise-focused tools, coding capabilities, and agentic AI systems. These systems are designed to perform tasks autonomously, including writing code and analysing data, aligning with growing demand from business users.

The report also notes that high compute costs and unclear long-term demand contributed to the decision. OpenAI is consolidating efforts into a unified “superapp” combining ChatGPT, coding tools, and browsing, aiming for a clearer product vision ahead of a possible IPO.

Meanwhile, Disney has stepped back from its earlier agreement with OpenAI following this shift. The Sora team is now expected to focus on research areas like world simulation and robotics, signalling a move towards longer-term bets.
