MWC 2024: Samsung Galaxy Ring is a minimalistic alternative to a smartwatch

MWC 2024 has seen several cool tech announcements so far – including Lenovo’s concept ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, the HDM Barbie Flip phone, and the Avenir Telecom Hard Case P28K – a phone with a 28,000mAh battery.

However, one of the most exciting announcements at the event by far is from Samsung, which has finally unveiled the long-awaited Galaxy Ring. Read on to find out more.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: What we know so far

Samsung, after first displaying a render of the Galaxy Ring at the Galaxy Unpacked event last month, finally showed the device at MWC 2024 and revealed a few additional details about it. The Samsung Galaxy Ring has a chunky, concave design, same as the Oura Ring 3.

The device will be offered in sizes 5 to 13, denoted by alphabets S to XL, marked on the inside of the ring. The battery capacity on the ring will vary from 14.5mAh to 21.5mAh, depending on the size you choose to purchase.

According to a blog from the company’s VP, Dr. Hon Pak, the Samsung Galaxy Ring will be able to track users’ heart rate, movement as well as breathing patterns, and sleep cycles based on the same.

There’s also a new tool on offer called ‘My Vitality Score,’ which measures users’ alertness such that they know if they’re performing any given task at their best. It provides personalised insights to users based on the aforementioned data, and a Booster Card will also give users tips as well as define actionables to help them reach their fitness goals.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring is being touted as a more minimalistic alternative to a smartwatch. However, like all the company’s other products, the wearable device will be part of the Samsung Health ecosystem, and therefore be compatible with its Samsung Galaxy Watch6. Whether it will be compatible with older models, however, remains to be seen as of now.

For Galaxy Watch6 users, this means that means can use both devices at once to track their health parameters, as well as get higher quality data and insights into the same.

Pak confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Ring will only be compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones, for now, though the company is already working on compatibility with other Android devices. iOS compatibility, however, is still being decided on.
