Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Biggest changes expected on Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone

Samsung’s summer hardware event is nearly here, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is shaping up to be the sleekest iteration yet of the company’s folding ambitions. While it may not bring a radical overhaul, the Fold 7 appears poised to make meaningful, across-the-board refinements that could elevate the foldable experience, especially for early adopters who’ve stuck around since the hinge-heavy early days.

From the looks of it, Samsung’s message this year is less “Look at what’s new” and more “Look at how much better this is now.” Based on leaks, renders, and insider reports, here’s all the changes we expect from the next-gen foldable flagship from Samsung.

Thinner than ever before

The biggest visual and functional change? The Fold 7’s new dimensions. Samsung seems laser-focused on slicing down the phone’s profile, allegedly aiming for a record-setting 8.2mm when folded and an astonishing 4.1mm when unfolded.

To put that into perspective, last year’s Fold 6 came in at 12.1mm folded and 5.6mm unfolded. Even Oppo’s svelte Find N5, one of the slimmest foldables out there, measures 4.21mm when open. Early renders suggest that the corners are more rounded this year too, ditching the harsher lines of its predecessor for a friendlier silhouette.

Slightly bigger screens, less prominent crease

Don’t expect Samsung to reinvent the display this year, at least not in terms of specs. Rumours indicate the Fold 7 will pack an 8-inch internal screen and a 6.5-inch outer display. That’s a minor bump from the Fold 6’s 7.6-inch interior panel, but still noteworthy for a form factor where every millimeter counts.

Where Samsung may truly make waves is with the crease (or the lack thereof). Reports claim a reengineered hinge and new layering techniques will result in a crease that’s “nearly invisible”. Expect a brightness boost too and the debut of Samsung’s “ProScaler” tech on a foldable, upscaling lower-res content for more seamless viewing.

Snapdragon 8 Elite, One UI 8, and familiar power

Under the hood, the Fold 7 is expected to come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. It’ll reportedly be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to a hefty 1TB.

There’s no indication that we’ll see a jump to 16GB of RAM, even though the Fold’s multitasking DNA might benefit from the extra overhead. Software-wise, we may see One UI 8 based on Android 16.

Camera to get a long-awaited upgrade

Let’s be honest, Samsung’s foldables haven’t exactly been camera-forward. But the Fold 7 may finally change that with a major leap – a 200MP main sensor, reportedly carried over from the Fold 6 Special Edition. That’s four times the megapixels of the Fold 6’s 50MP sensor.

The supporting cameras will reportedly remain unchanged but if Samsung nails the 200MP implementation, the Fold 7 could finally rival its Galaxy S siblings in photo quality.

Qi2 wireless charging

The Fold 7 is expected to retain the same 4,400mAh battery as the Fold 6, along with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. Additionally, the foldable may be Samsung’s first to support Qi2 wireless charging, a magnetic alignment standard akin to Apple’s MagSafe.

The catch? You’ll need a compatible magnetic case for it to work, so don’t expect native snap-to-charge action yet.
