Sony PS6 memory leak hints at 30GB GDDR7 and major performance jump

Sony’s next-generation PlayStation console is still some time away from its official unveiling, but early hardware leaks are starting to offer hints about its direction. Recent reports suggest that the PlayStation 6 could arrive with a significant memory upgrade, indicating Sony may be prioritising long-term performance and future-ready hardware.

PS6 memory leak suggests major generational upgrade

According to hardware insider Kepler_L2, the upcoming Sony PlayStation 6 may include 30GB of GDDR7 RAM, which would represent a notable increase compared to the 16GB GDDR6 found in the current PlayStation 5.

The rumoured configuration involves ten 3GB memory modules arranged on a 160-bit bus, delivering an estimated bandwidth of around 640GB/s. While the bus width appears narrower compared to traditional designs, faster GDDR7 speeds could compensate by improving data throughput.

If accurate, this memory configuration could help developers build larger game worlds, improve ray tracing performance and enable more advanced AI-driven upscaling technologies. Higher memory capacity also gives studios additional flexibility over a console generation that typically spans several years, ensuring the hardware remains capable as game engines evolve.

Cost challenges and long-term strategy

One of the main concerns surrounding such a memory upgrade is pricing. Industry discussions suggest that increasing memory capacity to 30GB may add around Rs equivalent of $100 to the overall hardware cost, especially during a period where memory prices remain volatile due to strong demand from AI infrastructure.

Some observers argue that a lower configuration around 20GB could balance performance and affordability, but the leaker believes that may not provide enough headroom for future titles. Other rumours mention a new AMD-based processor built on future CPU and GPU architectures, along with a possible handheld companion device featuring up to 24GB of LPDDR5X memory.

While some reports point towards a 2027 or early 2028 release window, industry speculation also considers 2029 as a potential launch timeframe, depending on development progress and market conditions. Since the console remains unannounced, specifications and timelines may still change, but current leaks suggest Sony could be targeting a platform designed to remain relevant for many years.
