What is refrigerant?

We all use refrigerators in our day-to-day lives. While it helps us keep our food and beverages fresh and cold, have you ever wondered what it is that helps the refrigerator maintain its temperature? Well, a refrigerator typically uses a substance known as a refrigerant for its inner workings. This particular substance helps the refrigerator in keeping the food and beverages nice and cold. Here’s what you should know about refrigerants.

The refrigerant in refrigerators is the main component that helps in transporting heat from one place to another with the help of modern cooling technology. Once it transfers the heat, the refrigerator is able to maintain the desired temperature. Literally, refrigerant is made of different chemical compounds that can facilitate the transitions easily.

Refrigerants today have undergone huge transformations to comply with the environment. Earlier, they were made up of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). These elements took a huge toll on the environment and ended up interfering with the ozone layer. However, after many experiments, refrigerants were introduced with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrocarbons (HCs). These elements are more environmentally friendly options as compared to conventional technology.
