WhatsApp may soon add automatic noise cancellation for clearer conversations

WhatsApp appears to be preparing a new feature aimed at improving the calling experience on its platform. A recent discovery in a WhatsApp beta build suggests that the messaging service may soon introduce built-in noise cancellation for voice and video calls. The feature is still under development, but early details provide a glimpse of how it could make conversations clearer in noisy surroundings.

WhatsApp testing built-in noise cancellation for calls

According to information shared by WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.11.8. The upcoming tool is designed to reduce unwanted background sounds during calls, allowing the user’s voice to remain clearer even when there is surrounding noise such as traffic, wind, or conversations nearby.

Noise cancellation works by identifying background sounds captured by the microphone and filtering them in real time. The system focuses on isolating the speaker’s voice while minimising other audio signals. As a result, participants on the other end of the call may hear clearer speech with fewer distractions.

The feature is expected to activate automatically when a call begins. WhatsApp may display a small notification to inform users that noise cancellation has been enabled. This automatic activation aims to ensure that audio quality improves without requiring users to manually adjust settings every time they start a call.

Feature expected to arrive in a future update

While the system will be enabled by default, WhatsApp is also planning to give users control over it. The option to switch off noise cancellation will likely appear within the call interface. This could be useful in situations where background sounds are important, such as when sharing music or ambient audio during a call.

Another important detail is that the technology works locally on the device. The audio captured from the microphone is filtered before it is encrypted and transmitted, meaning the process does not affect WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.

At the moment, the feature is still being refined and is not yet available for public beta testers. Once development and testing are complete, WhatsApp is expected to roll out the feature gradually through a future update to improve the calling experience on Android devices.
