WhatsApp has announced a new feature designed for younger users that introduces parent-managed accounts. The update allows parents or guardians to supervise how pre-teens use the messaging platform. The company says the feature is aimed at providing a safer communication environment for children who are beginning to use smartphones.
WhatsApp parent-managed accounts explained
The new account type is intended for users under the age of 13 and must be created and supervised by a parent or guardian. These accounts are linked to the parent’s WhatsApp account, allowing adults to control several communication settings and privacy options. The feature was developed after feedback from families and safety experts who wanted a more guided messaging experience for younger users.

Parent-managed accounts come with stricter privacy defaults and fewer features compared to regular accounts. Pre-teens can use the app mainly for private messaging and voice calls so they can stay connected with trusted contacts. Parents can decide who is allowed to contact their child and which groups they can join.
Message requests from unknown numbers are placed in a separate section that parents can review using a dedicated PIN. At the same time, chats and calls continue to remain protected with end-to-end encryption.
Some features available to regular users are not included in these accounts. WhatsApp says pre-teens will not be able to access Status updates, Channels, Meta AI features, or disappearing messages in individual chats. Parents can also receive alerts when their child adds, blocks, or reports a contact, helping them stay informed about activity on the account.
How to set-up a parent managed account
Parents who want to create a supervised account for their child can complete the process during registration using both devices.
Step 1: Download WhatsApp on the child’s phone from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and begin the setup process.
Step 2: Select the option to create a parent-managed account, then register and verify the child’s phone number.
Step 3: Enter the child’s date of birth to confirm eligibility and proceed to link the account with the parent’s device.
Step 4: Scan the QR code shown on the child’s phone using the parent’s device and verify that the parent is an adult.
Step 5: Create a six-digit parent PIN that will be required to access and change privacy settings on the child’s account.
Step 6: Enter the PIN on the child’s phone to finish the setup and complete the account creation process.
