Clearer conversations could be on the horizon

WhatsApp’s next big feature is noise cancellation for voice and video calls

WhatsApp is said to be working on improving its calling experience. A new feature called ‘noise cancellation’ for voice and video calls is being rolled out to a limited number of beta users. On paper, this feature should make conversations clearer and focused, even when users are in crowded or loud surroundings.

WhatsApp gets noise cancellation feature

The noise cancellation feature has been discovered in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.11.8 that is available on the Google Play Store. It is automatically designed to filter out background disturbances such as traffic, wind, and ambient chatter.

As per screenshots shared by WABetaInfo, the noise cancellation option is within the calling interface. It is typically enabled by default for both voice and video calls. The source adds that the feature improves how clearly the other person hears voice but it does not enhance the incoming audio if the other receiver has not enabled noise cancellation. For the best results, both users are recommended to turn on the feature.

Noise cancellation on WhatsApp is said to be useful in cases where users are in busy cafes, parks, or public transport. It works on real-time audio processing to isolate the user’s voice, suppress background sounds.

Noise cancellation for WhatsApp is currently available to some beta testers who install the latest version. The feature is rolling out gradually and it should be available to everybody in the coming weeks.
