WhatsApp to change how you connect

Here’s when WhatsApp usernames feature is expected to roll out

WhatsApp appears to be preparing a major shift in how users connect on its platform. As per an Economic Times report, the company is working on a new identity system that could reduce dependence on phone numbers. The update signals a broader change in how communication and discovery may evolve on the app.

Usernames system and rollout timeline

The report suggests that WhatsApp is planning to introduce unique usernames and IDs, enabling users to send messages or make calls without sharing their phone numbers. The feature is expected to roll out globally by June 2026. Both individuals and businesses may be able to reserve handles, similar to identity systems seen on platforms like Instagram.

The usernames feature is expected to remain optional, allowing users to continue using phone numbers if they prefer. This approach is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition and preventing users from moving to competing platforms such as Telegram or Signal. It also maintains continuity in markets like India, where WhatsApp has a large user base.

From a user perspective, this move could improve privacy and reduce unwanted contact exposure. It may also make it easier to connect with businesses or new contacts without exchanging personal numbers

Business model changes and industry impact

In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is reportedly exploring a new pricing model for businesses. Companies may need to bid in real time to send marketing messages, moving away from the current fixed pricing structure. Testing for this system is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with a wider rollout likely in 2027.

Industry observers believe this could strengthen WhatsApp’s revenue strategy while keeping interactions within its ecosystem. However, it may also raise concerns about data control and platform dependency as regulations around messaging platforms continue to evolve.
