Amazon introduced its first-ever Kindle in 2007, and since then it has launched a host of iterations for all kinds of users and at different price points. But if you’re still holding onto one of the older Kindle e-readers, there’s some not-so-great news.
The brand is officially pulling support on some of its oldest devices starting next month. The company has confirmed that these include Kindles released in 2012 or earlier. While the affected models will continue to work, their capabilities are likely to be significantly limited.
Amazon cuts off support for its older Kindles
Owners of the original Kindle, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, Kindle Paperwhite won’t be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content starting May 20,2026.
These models are 14 to 18 years older now, and Amazon says that technology has come a long way in that time.
Fortunately, users can still continue reading previously downloaded eBooks without any interruption. New content can still be downloaded till the deadline date. Users’ accounts and Kindle Library also remain fully accessible through the free Kindle app and Kindle web version.

Amazon warns that if the older Kindle models are de-registered or factory reset after May 20, then they cannot be registered again. This means that the device will be permanently locked out of Amazon services. The company is emailing all affected users in the US about the change.
It’s likely that Kindle devices in India will also lose support, so if you’re among the earliest adopters of Kindles, now is a great time to upgrade to the latest model. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for more tech updates.
