Several reports suggest that Apple is working on its first foldable phone, which is expected to launch next year. Numerous rumours have already revealed key details about the device. What makes Apple’s offering particularly interesting is that it is expected to arrive with a unique design that could set a new trend in the segment.
While other brands have been part of the foldable market for years, Apple’s fresh approach may influence competitors to follow suit.
Apple’s first foldable phone to sport wide-folding design
According to tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple’s first foldable phone is expected to revitalise the foldable phone market in 2027. The reason behind this is its unique wide-folding design. Samsung, too, is said to be evaluating a similar wide foldable concept.
Other reports have revealed that its design could be somewhat similar to the Huawei Pura X, which is a clamshell-style foldable phone with a wider 16:10 aspect ratio compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola Razr 60 Ultra, both of which feature a taller 22:9 aspect ratio.
While the Pura X focuses on being a compact, wide phone that is easy to use when folded, Apple’s design is aimed at transforming into a large, horizontally wide screen when unfolded, closer to a small iPad than a regular smartphone.
The tipster mentions that the device would offer an inner display measuring 7.58 inches in the unfolded state. On the front, it is said to feature a 5.265-inch cover display with a punch-hole cutout.
The internal screen is expected to feature an under-display camera, which would be a first for Apple. In terms of cameras, the device is said to be equipped with a pair of 48MP rear cameras.
For security, the foldable iPhone is tipped to feature a side-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor, skipping 3D Face ID and ultrasonic fingerprint technology to keep the device thinner. A recent report claimed that it may only arrive in e-SIM version.
Launch timeframe (expected)
Reports suggest that Apple’s first foldable phone could debut in September 2026. At the same event, the company is also expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
