Several reports have claimed that Apple is likely to unveil its first foldable phone in 2026. Samsung has been leading the foldable phone market for quite some time, and while there are other brands in this segment, Apple could pose a real threat to Samsung. The rumour mill has been gradually leaking details about the iPhone Fold. Here’s a look at everything that has surfaced about Apple’s first foldable.
Design and Display
While Apple is said to be working on both book-style and flip-style foldable phones, the first one expected to hit the market next year is likely to be the book-style model. Although its final marketing name is not known yet, it is tentatively referred to as the iPhone Fold by industry insiders. It is said to measure around 9 to 9.5mm when folded and around 4.5 to 4.8mm when unfolded.
The iPhone Fold is expected to feature a 7.8-inch foldable OLED inner screen with a 2712 x 1920 pixels resolution. The outer display is said to measure 5.5-inch and offer a 2088 x 1422 pixels resolution.
Crease and Build
Reports claim that with the help of a metal plate underneath the inner display, the device will be able to disperse and control the stress that leads to creasing caused by repeated folding. The result is expected to be an almost crease-free experience.
The iPhone Fold is rumoured to sport a durable titanium chassis paired with a titanium alloy frame. Its hinge is said to be constructed using a combination of stainless steel and titanium.
Cameras and Touch ID
Both the front and internal displays of the iPhone Fold are said to house selfie cameras. Its back panel is expected to feature dual 48MP cameras. For security, the device is rumoured to include a side-facing Touch ID button.
Battery and Connectivity
Although the exact battery size is not yet known, Apple is reportedly using high-density battery cells to power the iPhone Fold. For cellular connectivity, the company is expected to employ its second-generation C2 modem. It is also said to only come in e-SIM version.
Price and launch timeframe
Apple’s iPhones typically carry a premium price tag, and the same is expected from the iPhone Fold. Some reports claim the device may launch in the US at $2,399 (~Rs 2,16,900). At present, there are no concrete leaks about its India pricing. It is expected to arrive in black and white colour options.
The iPhone Fold is likely to debut in September 2026. The same event is expected to see the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. For those wondering about the rest of the lineup, Apple may introduce the iPhone 18, a second-generation iPhone Air, and the iPhone 17e in March 2027. If you prefer a flip-style foldable phone, the rumoured iPhone Flip is expected to debut in 2028.
