Foldable concept that Apple dropped

Flip-style iPhone reportedly cancelled due to no use cases

Rumours about Apple’s first foldable iPhone have been circulating for years, with multiple reports suggesting the company is exploring different form factors. While most recent leaks point to a book-style foldable iPhone expected to launch in September this year, a new claim indicates that Apple had also considered another clamshell foldable iPhone. However, the company may have decided not to move forward with that particular concept.

Why Apple may have abandoned the clamshell foldable

According to information shared by Weibo tipster Instant Digital, Apple had explored the possibility of launching a clamshell-style foldable iPhone similar to the flip phones currently offered by several Android brands. The idea was reportedly discussed internally as a potential companion device alongside Apple’s larger book-style foldable model.

The leak suggests that the flip-style design did not gain strong support within the company. Engineers and product teams reportedly concluded that the concept did not introduce meaningful new use cases. Its main advantage would have been a more compact form factor when folded, which many within the company apparently did not consider compelling enough to justify the trade-offs.

Another key concern reportedly involved internal hardware limitations. A clamshell foldable design divides the phone’s internal space into two sections due to the hinge mechanism.

Hardware compromises may have influenced the decision

The leak further claims that adopting a flip-style foldable could have forced Apple to reduce battery capacity and simplify its rear camera system. High-end camera hardware, including complex optics expected in future iPhone models, requires significant internal space. Fitting those components into a foldable shell may have resulted in noticeable compromises in photography performance.

Instead of pursuing a clamshell foldable, Apple is believed to be focusing on a wider book-style foldable iPhone that is expected to launch this year. Reports indicate that this device could feature a large internal display measuring around 7.8 inches and a battery capacity of roughly 5,800mAh.
