Apple may build an AI App Store around Siri Extensions: What to expect

A new report indicates that Apple is preparing a major AI shift with iOS 27, where Siri could support third-party chatbots through a new Extensions feature. This move hints at a broader ecosystem-driven strategy rather than a direct AI race.

Siri Extensions could reshape Apple’s AI approach

According to Mark Gurman’s insights, Apple is likely to introduce a feature called Siri Extensions with iOS 27, expected to be announced at WWDC 2026 on June 8. This feature may allow users to install third-party AI chatbots and access them directly within Siri. It is also expected to include a dedicated section in the App Store, effectively creating a marketplace for AI tools and integrations.

Instead of trying to match rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in building advanced models, Apple appears to be focusing on its strengths in hardware and ecosystem control. The idea is to offer a solid default experience while allowing external services to expand functionality, similar to how the App Store operates today.

This approach may also help Apple generate revenue through commissions on AI-driven apps, while keeping users within its ecosystem. At the same time, the company is expected to continue offering its own AI features to ensure a seamless out-of-the-box experience across devices.

Hardware focus and partnerships remain key

Apple’s strategy also includes collaboration with external platforms. Reports indicate that the company is working with Google to integrate Gemini-based capabilities into Siri, helping improve performance without relying entirely on in-house models. At the same time, Apple is likely to maintain its privacy-focused approach, with processing handled on-device or through its secure cloud systems.

The broader direction suggests that Apple is positioning itself as a platform provider in the AI space rather than a direct competitor in foundational models. Its chips and devices are already capable of handling AI tasks efficiently, which allows the company to prioritise hardware-driven growth while enabling third-party innovation.

This shift could play a crucial role in future product categories as well, including wearables and smart home devices, where integrated AI experiences will be essential.
