ChatGPT to stop working on WhatsApp from January 2026, here’s how to save your chats

Back in December 2024, it was made official that ChatGPT would be accessible through WhatsApp for both chats and calls. However, an official post by OpenAI has now confirmed that WhatsApp support for ChatGPT will end due to a change in policy and terms starting next year.

ChatGPT to discontinue WhatsApp services next year

At present, users can talk with ChatGPT on WhatsApp via call by dialling the contact number +1 (800) 242-8478. The same number can also be used for text chats with ChatGPT. According to OpenAI, these services will be unavailable starting January 2026.

The company stated, “While we would have much preferred to continue serving you on WhatsApp, we are focused on making the transition as easy for all of our users as possible.” That being said, ChatGPT remains available through its dedicated app on Android, iOS, and desktop. Soon, it will also be accessible through the company’s own Atlas web browser, which was recently made official for macOS users.

How to transfer ChatGPT chats from WhatsApp?

Since WhatsApp does not provide an option to export chats, it also does not support exporting ChatGPT conversations directly. However, there’s a workaround that allows you to migrate your ChatGPT WhatsApp chat history in just a few steps.

To do this, go to the profile page of the WhatsApp contact number +1 (800) 242-8478. There, you’ll find a link to your ChatGPT account. Once selected, all your previous conversations with ChatGPT on WhatsApp will automatically appear in your ChatGPT chat history.

WhatsApp bans AI companies from using its data

OpenAI’s announcement follows WhatsApp’s recent update to its business API policy, which silently introduced restrictions preventing AI companies such as OpenAI and Perplexity from using their chatbots on WhatsApp’s massive user base of over 3 million users.

While OpenAI has issued an official statement regarding this change, Perplexity AI, which also operates on Telegram and X (formerly Twitter), has yet to confirm whether it will end support on WhatsApp as well.
