Instagram adds new ‘Your Algorithm’ tool for customising your Reels feed

Instagram’s new Your Algorithm feature has been announced through recent updates, offering a clearer and more accessible way for users to understand and influence what appears in their Reels feed.

Many users have long felt that recommendations do not accurately reflect their interests, and this update aims to address that gap. It highlights how interest-based recommendations work and gives users a direct route to modify them based on changing preferences.

An AI-based system that lets users tune their Reels feed

The new Your Algorithm feature relies on AI to create a summary of topics Instagram believes match a user’s interests, drawn from ongoing activity within the app. This summary becomes visible through an icon on the top right of a Reel, allowing users to inspect and refine what shapes their viewing experience.

Categories may include painting, fitness, day in life, horror films or sports-related themes. Instagram has confirmed that the feature will reach more surfaces, including Explore, in the coming months. The rollout begins in the United States before expanding globally in English.

How to adjust your Reels preferences

To help users navigate this feature with ease, Instagram has laid out a simple process for making adjustments.

Step 1: Users can access the feature by tapping the icon resembling two hearts on line sliders that appear on the Reels interface at the top-right corner.

This opens the Your Algorithm page, displaying the AI-generated list of interests that influence recommendations.

Step 2: The tool then allows adjustments, where users can choose from available options under the sections “What you want to see more of” and “What you want to see less of.”

With this addition, Instagram aims to give users greater clarity and more meaningful control over how their Reels experience evolves. Instagram has stated that similar algorithm controls are being tested for Threads and that more feedback tools will arrive across Meta platforms.
