After iPhones, Delta Emulator set to bring retro games to iPads too

The Delta Game Emulator app has taken iPhones by storm in the past couple of weeks, quickly becoming one of the most downloaded apps. It also revealed just how many people still hold vintage games close to their hearts. Now, that same experience is set to come to Apple iPads as well.

Delta Emulator developer Riley Testut has recently shared an update on the development of the app on Threads, suggesting that a version of Delta is also being built for iPads. The post adds that the iPad app is also near completion, which means it may not be too long before we see Delta-powered retro games running on iPads.

If you’re a paid member of Testut’s Patreon channel however, you can grab the early access version of Delta for iPads right away. This is possible through the AltStore, an alternative to the App Store that is available in the select regions where Apple has allowed app sideloading possible.

Others, including Indian iPad users who don’t have access to alternative app markets just yet will have to wait for the next major Delta update (Delta 1.6) for iPad support.

Why the emulator is a great idea for iPads

Apart from enabling millions of iPad users around the world enjoy retro gaming for free on their devices, Delta can also leverage the size of Apple’s tablets for a better gaming experience.

This means anyone with an iPad mini can enjoy retro gaming on a screen that’s bigger than the iPhones. Meanwhile those with a larger device like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be able to take it even further.

The app already supports external controllers, including the Sony DualSense controller, so those willing to pair accessories will be able to have a full-fledged console gaming experience on their tablets using the app.

Testut further shared that the team is also working on device-to-device multiplayer support. The emulator will also support games from all the retro platforms supported on the iPhone version. This includes the NES, SNES, N64, and Nintendo DS, with support for SEGA Genesis on the way.

What is Delta-Game Emulator?

For the uninitiated, Delta-Game Emulator is a free third-party app that acts as an emulator for many retro gaming platforms like the Nintendo DS. The app is available to download officially on the App Store, and requires no signup, subscription or any other user-data. You can read all about how to use it in our detailed blog on how to use the Delta emulator.
