Avoid the squeeze by getting the right fit for your dishwasher

Dishwasher size guide: How to measure before buying

Like the refrigerator and washing machine, the dishwasher has become another game-changing kitchen appliance. While a dishwasher makes it easy to automatically wash dishes, utensils, and cookware, there is one step you can’t afford to miss while shopping for a new dishwasher: measuring your space correctly. Since dishwashers come in different sizes and configurations, you need to know whether it will fit in your kitchen. In this dishwasher size guide, we will help you understand how to measure before buying.

Dishwasher size guide: How to measure

Before we get to standard dishwasher sizes available in the market, let’s first understand how to measure your space for a dishwasher before buying. In order to do this, you will need a measuring tape and

Step 1: Measure the width

Place the measuring tape between the cabinets or walls where the dishwasher will sit. Now, measure at the top, middle, and bottom to ensure the width is consistent. If these measurements vary, select the dimension with the smallest variation.

Step 2: Measure the height

For height, measure from the floor to the bottom of the countertop. The standard height of a dishwasher is a minimum of 34-inches, and while measuring the height, you need to factor in the standard dimension as well as any flooring in your kitchen.

Step 3: Measure the depth

The last step is to measure the depth, which is essentially the measurement from the back wall to the front edge of the place where your dishwasher will sit. Most dishwashers need at least 24-inches of depth to ensure you can easily handle the appliance or fully open the door during the washing process.

Once you have measured these three dimensions, you need to factor in any obstructions such as water lines, outlets, or any other kitchen design element that could interfere with the dishwasher and leave space accordingly. You also need to leave some space for the power socket and a water inlet or outlet nearby.

The smartest thing to do while measuring the space for the dishwasher is to leave a clearance of half an inch or 1-inch on each side. You must leave at least a 1-inch clearance behind the dishwasher for ventilation and wiring, like you would do with your refrigerator or washing machine.

Dishwasher size guide: Standard size

Dishwashers mostly fall into one of three size categories: Standard/Full-size, Slimline, and Countertop or compact dishwashers. The standard or full-size dishwasher has a dimension of 24-inch x 24-inch x 34-inch and a capacity between 12 to 16 place settings. These models are designed for medium to large households or those who wash a lot of dishes regularly.

The slimline models are approximately 18-inch x 24-inch x 34-inch and feature 8 to 10 place settings. They are designed for small kitchens or apartments, or families with 2-3 members. If you have limited kitchen space, then a countertop or compact dishwasher measuring 20-inch x 22-inch x 17-inch will be more appropriate.

Once you have a clear understanding of the standard dimensions as well as the measurement of your kitchen space, the next decision is to choose between a built-in or freestanding dishwasher. A built-in dishwasher is installed under the kitchen counter and is the best solution for modular kitchens whereas a freestanding dishwasher can be placed anywhere and is ideal for those without a permanent setup.
