Google is reportedly working on a new operating system project that will bring Android to PCs. Android Authority, which first uncovered the initiative, claims the project is internally codenamed ‘Aluminium OS’.
The publication found references to an “Aluminium, Android-based, operating system” (ALOS) in Google’s internal job listings, along with mentions of new device tiers linked to the platform.
Google’s Android-based Aluminium OS for PC in works
According to reports, Google’s upcoming operating system is internally referred to as Aluminium OS. As mentioned above, it is described as Android based and designed with Artificial Intelligence at the centre of the user experience.
The job listing outlining the platform mentions that this system is intended for a wide range of hardware, including laptops, tablets, mini-PCs and detachable devices. The role also references commercial tiers such as AL Entry, AL Mass Premium and AL Premium, hinting that Google intends to target both affordable and high-end machines.
A key detail is Google’s collaboration with Qualcomm, which was publicly acknowledged during a recent Snapdragon event. The companies plan to create a shared foundation that blends mobile and desktop computing.
As per the publication, internal code references show that Google is testing Aluminium OS on systems with Intel Alder Lake and MediaTek Kompanio chipsets, suggesting that certain existing Chromebooks could eventually receive an upgrade. The name itself appears to follow the pattern of Chromium, reflecting a link to the ChromeOS lineage.
What this means for ChromeOS
The listing suggests that ChromeOS and Aluminium OS will coexist for a period. The selected candidate will help manage both platforms and craft a plan for transitioning Google’s desktop ecosystem to Aluminium while maintaining continuity for enterprises and education users.
Google is likely to retain ChromeOS branding during the early stages, but long-term signals point toward Aluminium OS eventually becoming the foundation for future PC products. The platform is expected to debut in 2026, with its public reveal likely to align with upcoming developer events.
