We’ve all waited for our Hogwarts acceptance letter, and most of us even have a wand of our own to cast some magical spells. While it might be a bit late for us to attend the magical school, it doesn’t mean we have to live like muggles. What if we told you can cast magic spells with your smartphone? Don’t believe us? Here’s a little surprise for you on Harry Potter’s birthday. Conjure up Google Assistant or Siri and try these voice commands on your smartphone.

Lumos

The wand-lighting charm, Lumos, is one of the most well-known Harry Potter spells. When you say it to your voice assistant on Android phones or iPhones, it turns on your phone’s flashlight.

Nox

The counter-charm to Lumos, Nox, is used to extinguish illuminated wands. You can use this to turn off your phone’s flashlight.

Silencio

The silencing charm that temporarily mutes the victim can be used to turn the media volume of your smartphone to zero.

That’s not all – you can also use Routines on Android phones or the Shortcuts app on iPhones to teach new magical voice commands to your virtual assistants. Create a new routine or a shortcut with a Harry Potter spell name and define what would happen once you give the command. Here are some command (read: spell) ideas you can teach the voice assistants.

Circumrota

The charm to turn or rotate objects can be very handy when you want to rotate your smartphone’s screen. Say “Circumrota” to turn on the auto-rotate function.

Muffliato

The muffling charm prevents others from hearing or disturbing your conversations. You can use it to turn on the DND mode of your smartphone.

Portus

This charm turns any object into a portkey an enchanted object transporting the person touching it to a fixed location. On your phone, you can use it to turn on navigation. Just say “Portus” followed by your destination.

Sonorus

The amplifying charm can be used as a counter to the silencing charm, Silencio. Say “Sonorus” and turn your smartphone’s volume to 100.

These routines or shortcuts are not limited to your smartphones. You can integrate your smart home appliances, like smart lighting and smart speakers, into your routine or shortcut. For instance, you can use Lumos Maxima to turn on all the lights in your house. There’s no limit to what you can do when you solemnly swear that you are up to no good.
