How much space should you leave around your refrigerator?

A refrigerator keeps your food from going stale and keeps its nutritional value intact. This is why almost every house has a refrigerator. But do you know that a refrigerator must have adequate space to work properly? It is important to know this, to ensure it functions smoothly.

Why do you need to leave space around your refrigerator?

Every refrigerator requires breathing space to function properly. If it does not get enough room for air circulation, the system will heat up and work twice as hard to remain cool. This will also increase your electricity bills and shorten the lifespan of your refrigerator.

A refrigerator can have heating coils underneath or on the back, which radiate heat outside. Therefore, this area must have enough space to conduct this heat back into the room. If there is no space, there will be no scope for convection, making the fridge inefficient.

How much space should you leave around your refrigerator?

Generally, there should be a minimum space of 1- 1-1/2 inches on the top of your fridge. This space helps dissipate heat. If you have cabinets on the top of your fridge, make sure that there is enough clearance above.

There should also be a space of 1-2 inches on the back of the fridge to allow proper air circulation. Newer refrigerator models have their coils at the back so leaving space is imperative to have proper ventilation.

On each of the sides, there should be a space of 1/2-1 inch. This space will allow you to fit a vacuum nozzle or a mop when you want to clean the sides of the fridge. Also, it will allow you to move the fridge easily for cleaning or repair work.

Besides ventilation, your fridge must also have enough space so you can open and close the fridge door with ease. Also, you must put your refrigerator in such a place that allows you to move freely in the kitchen. Thus, plan your kitchen accordingly. Lastly, you should also make sure that these areas of clearance remain clean for the smooth functioning of your refrigerator.
