In the ongoing arms race of generative AI tools, OpenAI just made its next move, and it’s all happening inside WhatsApp. The popular messaging app is now home to one of ChatGPT’s most creative features – AI image generation, directly via chat, and completely free.
This rollout doesn’t just challenge Meta’s own AI assistant already built into WhatsApp, it sets a new standard for how accessible, playful, and productive AI can become in daily communication. Here’s a closer look at how it works and how you can start using it today.
A familiar app gets an unexpected upgrade
For most users, WhatsApp is where planning, sharing, and everyday conversations take place. By introducing AI image generation into this already deeply embedded ecosystem, OpenAI removes the friction of needing a separate app, login, or interface to create imaginative visuals.
OpenAI’s integration is available through a dedicated chatbot number, first launched in late 2024, and now upgraded with new capabilities that allow users to generate images from text prompts; no subscriptions or credits needed.
How to use ChatGPT to create AI images in WhatsApp
Setting up the ChatGPT image bot is as straightforward as saving a new contact. Here’s how you can get started:
Step 1: First, add +1 800 242 8478 to your phone.
Step 2: Then, open WhatsApp and initiate a conversation by sending a message like “Hi.”
Step 3: The chatbot will guide you to securely log in to your OpenAI account via a link.
Step 4: Once verified, you’re ready to begin.
Step 5: Prompt away to create AI artwork for free within WhatsApp.

Once linked, the image generation feature works much like it does on ChatGPT’s web and mobile platforms. You can provide detailed text prompts such as: “An ancient tree growing on top of a skyscraper at sunset”.
Or even send a photo of yourself and ask the bot to reinterpret it in a particular art style. For instance: “Turn this selfie into a Studio Ghibli-inspired portrait”.
The image appears in-chat in a few minutes, delivered as a high-quality render ready to download or share.
Limitations to keep in mind
While impressive, the WhatsApp-based version of ChatGPT has a few caveats. The chatbot only supports text-based prompts; you won’t be able to voice-command or use group chats for image generation.
Features like ChatGPT Search and memory logs are not yet supported but are expected to roll out soon.
There’s no native support for animated content or stickers; this is purely static visual output, for now. And users are allowed to generate one image a day for now.
Still, what’s on offer is more than enough for users seeking quick, quality AI-generated visuals without leaving the app they already use most.
