Whether you use an Android phone or an iPhone, creating a local backup is quite straightforward and below are the easiest ways to back up your phone using a laptop:
Backing up an Android phone
Step 1: Connect your phone to your laptop
Start by connecting your phone to your computer using its USB cable. Then go to Settings > System > Developer options and turn on USB debugging. On some Android phones, this option may be under General > Developer options. If you do not see Developer options, you will need to enable them first.
Step 2: Copy your files manually
On your laptop, open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) and select your phone from the list of devices. From there, open folders like DCIM (for photos and videos), Downloads, or WhatsApp, and copy the files you want to save onto your laptop.
Backing up an iPhone
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your laptop
Use a USB cable to connect your iPhone. On Windows, iTunes should open automatically. On Mac, use Finder if you are running macOS Catalina or later.

Next, go to Settings > Connected devices > USB, and choose File transfer (sometimes called Android Auto). If a prompt appears on your screen about USB options, tap it and select Transfer files.
Step 2: Start the backup
In iTunes or Finder, click on your device name, then choose Back Up Now. If you want to include passwords, app settings, or health data, select the encryption option before starting the backup.
Once the backup is complete, you will see the time and date of the latest backup. To restore a backup, go to Summary > Restore Backup. If the backup was encrypted, you will need your password.
