Can Meta’s latest Quest steal Apple’s WWDC thunder?

Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headset unveiled

Mixed Reality, or the amalgamation of both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is considered to be the next big tech trend by many. And Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is one of the frontrunners in the space, thanks to a 2014 acquisition of headset maker Oculus. Now, Meta has released a new iteration of its popular Quest headset, called the Quest 3. While the Meta Quest 3 has been announced, the product will officially launch and be available to purchase sometime later this year.

Meta Quest 3: What’s new?

Coming to the product itself, the new Meta Quest 3 boasts a higher resolution than its predecessor and is powered by a mysterious “next-generation Snapdragon chipset”. Although the Qualcomm chip inside is unknown, Meta claims that it has “more than twice the graphical performance as the previous generation Snapdragon GPU in Quest 2.”

The Quest 3 also comes with a ‘40% slimmer optic profile’, and redesigned Touch Plus controllers which no longer have an outer tracking ring. The device also has TruTouch haptics, and even supports Meta’s Touch Pro controllers, although those will have to be purchased separately.

The new Meta Quest 3 is also backwards compatible with over 500 VR apps and games for the Quest 2. Additionally, Quest 3 users will also be able to leverage Hand tracking straight out-of-the-box.

The Meta Quest 3 prices start from $499.99 when it launches later this year, but interested users can go to the Quest 3 website to register themselves right now for the new Meta VR headset.

Meta Quest 2 still a good deal

For users who don’t want the latest cutting-edge VR tech but still want to have a good time in a virtual world of their choice, the Quest 2 is set to cost $299.99 (approximately ₹24,700) and $349.99 (approximately ₹28,800) from next week.

The older generation VR headset will also get a new software update expected to boost the CPU and GPU performance. Meta is also set to enable Dynamic Resolution Scaling on the Quest 2 soon.
