Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Battle for the mid-premium phone crown

Which one takes the win?

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Battle for the mid-premium phone crown

The mid-premium smartphone segment has become the most interesting battleground in tech. This is where brands experiment with design, push performance limits, and try to deliver just enough flagship magic without the eye-watering price tag.

Nothing and OnePlus approach this challenge from very different directions. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro leans heavily into personality; it’s got an unusual design, playful LEDs, and a camera setup that promises versatility.

The OnePlus 15R, meanwhile, focuses on brute capability. It packs a flagship-class processor, a massive battery, and durability that borders on overkill. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is priced starting at Rs 39,999, while the OnePlus 15R costs Rs 47,999.

On paper, they sit pretty close to each other in terms of price. In reality, they represent two completely different interpretations of what a modern mid-premium smartphone should prioritise. Let’s dive deeper in our comparison.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Build and design

Nothing continues to treat smartphone design as theatre. The Phone (4a) Pro arrives with a transparent rear panel and the company’s new Glyph Matrix, a circular LED display made up of 137 individually addressable LEDs.

It can reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness and display information such as timers, stopwatches, or weather updates without needing to wake the main screen.

Beyond the visual flair, the phone itself is fairly conventional in build. It measures 163.7 x 76.6 x 8mm, weighs 210g, and carries an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance. Gorilla Glass 7i protects the display, while the frame is aluminium with a glass rear.

The OnePlus 15R is the complete opposite. Its design language is restrained, almost conservative. A flush rear panel and metallic camera module echo the look of the flagship OnePlus 15. Buyers can choose between a glass finish or a fibre-reinforced plastic back, depending on the colour option.

Where OnePlus truly stands out is in durability. The 15R carries IP68 and IP69K ratings, meaning it can handle both immersion and high-pressure water jets. It is also slightly thicker at 8.1mm and weighs 213g, but the extra protection gives it a tougher, more utilitarian personality.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Display

Both phones use large AMOLED panels, but they chase performance in slightly different ways. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro features a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness climbs to 3,500 nits, while 2160Hz PWM dimming helps reduce flicker when the screen runs at lower brightness levels. The panel supports HDR10+ and can display Ultra HDR images with up to one billion colours.

The OnePlus 15R uses a display of the same size but pushes refresh rates slightly further to 165Hz. Peak brightness reaches 3,600 nits, and the panel supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

OnePlus also adds a gaming-focused twist. A dedicated chip enables up to a 3,200Hz touch sampling rate, something competitive mobile gamers may appreciate when rapid taps and reactions make the difference between winning and losing.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Performance

The biggest difference between the two phones lies under the hood. Nothing equips the Phone (4a) Pro with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, a 4nm chip paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It also features a large vapour chamber cooling system to keep temperatures in check during heavy workloads. It is a capable mid-range setup that should handle everyday multitasking and gaming comfortably.

The OnePlus 15R, however, pushes far beyond that category. It runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, a flagship-class processor built on a 3nm process. In practical terms, this means faster CPU performance, stronger graphics capabilities, and more headroom for demanding tasks such as high-frame-rate gaming or heavy multitasking. Simply put, the OnePlus 15R performs like a flagship that happens to cost less.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Cameras

While OnePlus dominates the performance race, Nothing counters with a more ambitious camera setup. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro uses a triple-camera system led by a 50MP Sony Lytia 700C sensor with optical image stabilisation. It also includes a 50MP periscope telephoto camera offering 3.5x optical zoom and roughly 7x zoom using in-sensor techniques. An 8MP ultrawide camera completes the setup. This gives the Nothing phone a clear advantage in zoom and shooting flexibility.

The OnePlus 15R keeps things simpler with a 50MP Sony IMX906 main camera paired with an 8MP ultrawide lens. Without a telephoto sensor, zoom relies entirely on digital cropping.

However, OnePlus compensates with stronger video features. It supports 4K recording at up to 120fps, and the 32MP front camera includes autofocus and 4K video recording. The Nothing phone limits front-camera recording to 1080p.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Battery life

Battery capacity is another area where OnePlus clearly aims for dominance. The OnePlus 15R houses a massive 7,400mAh silicon-carbon battery paired with 80W wired charging. It is the kind of capacity that suggests multi-day endurance for moderate users.

The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro uses a 5,080mAh battery globally, though the India variant increases this slightly to 5,400mAh. Charging speeds reach 50W, and the phone also supports 7.5W reverse wired charging for topping up accessories. While the Nothing phone remains competitive, the sheer size of the OnePlus battery is difficult to ignore.

Nothing Phone (4a) Pro vs OnePlus 15R: Which one should you get?

The comparison between the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and the OnePlus 15R ultimately comes down to priorities. The Nothing Phone (4a) Pro is for people who want their device to feel distinctive. Its design stands apart from the usual glass slabs, and its periscope camera adds a layer of photographic versatility rarely seen at this price.

The OnePlus 15R, on the other hand, is the practical powerhouse. With a flagship-grade processor, exceptional durability, and a gigantic battery, it focuses on delivering pure capability rather than visual flair.

In a market full of look-alike devices, these two phones prove that there is still more than one way to build a compelling smartphone. The real winner depends entirely on whether you value personality or performance. Which one is your pick? Drop a comment below to let us know.
