OpenAI Dime to be the AI giant’s first hardware product

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to step into the consumer hardware space, with recent leaks indicating that its first device may arrive sooner than expected. While earlier rumours pointed toward a more ambitious AI-centric gadget, newer information suggests the company may begin with something simpler.

The device, tentatively called Dime, has surfaced through multiple tipster reports and industry discussions, sparking interest about OpenAI’s hardware direction.

Dime: AI-powered earbuds may be OpenAI’s first hardware product

According to Chinese tipster Smart Pikachu, OpenAI’s initial hardware offering could take the form of wireless earbuds powered by the company’s own artificial intelligence models. Dime (internally known as Sweepea) is said to resemble conventional audio wearables but may integrate AI features aimed at enhancing interaction and everyday usability.

Earlier speculation suggested a revolutionary device with smartphone-like capabilities and independent computing power, but newer reports indicate that the company has adjusted its strategy to focus on a more practical entry-level product.

This change in direction is reportedly linked to rising hardware costs and ongoing shortages of advanced memory components such as high-bandwidth memory. A more advanced version with heavier onboard processing was previously considered, but its bill of materials reportedly approached smartphone-level expenses, making commercial viability challenging at this stage.

Strategic shift influenced by costs and long-term hardware goals

Reports suggest that OpenAI is adopting a phased approach by launching a simpler audio-first product to establish its presence in hardware while gathering real-world usage insights. Executive comments have hinted at a device designed to feel calmer and less intrusive than smartphones, possibly favouring screen-free interaction.

Interest around the project grew after OpenAI acquired IO, the design firm associated with former Apple designer Jony Ive, which added credibility to its hardware ambitions. Reports indicate that manufacturing partners such as Foxconn and Luxshare may be under consideration, although official confirmation remains limited.

If the timeline holds, the first-generation Dime earbuds could arrive in 2026, with a more advanced compute-heavy version potentially following once component availability improves and production costs stabilise.
