Android 17 will be one of the major announcements at the upcoming Google I/O 2026 event in May. While Google is preparing its next-generation Android OS version, smartphone OEMs are simultaneously developing their custom interfaces such as One UI 9 from Samsung, HyperOS 4 from Xiaomi and ColorOS 17 from Oppo. A Telegram handle that tracks OnePlus software updates has now shared early insights into what users can expect from OxygenOS 17.
OxygenOS 17: Early details leaked
As per the leak, OxygenOS 17 is set to introduce a significant system-wide fluidity upgrade. One of the most noticeable changes is said to be within the camera app, where zoom transitions during both photos and videos are now much smoother.
The source claims that issues like lag and flickering have been reduced considerably, resulting in a more seamless shooting experience. However, it remains unclear whether this refinement will be limited to upcoming devices or rolled out to older models as well.
Beyond camera improvements, the update is expected to bring comprehensive performance enhancements. UI frame drops have reportedly been reduced, while scrolling and animations feel more responsive and consistent. Low-load power efficiency has also been optimised, which could help improve day-to-day battery endurance without affecting performance.
Under the hood, deeper architectural refinements are said to play a key role. CPU usage has been streamlined and the time spent on garbage collection has been cut down, reducing app stutters. Background app retention is expected to improve, allowing users to switch between apps more smoothly. App launch speeds are also reported to be faster, contributing to a more stable and efficient overall experience.
Since ColorOS 17 is usually quite similar to OxygenOS 17, these improvements are likely to be reflected on Oppo devices as well.
Expected release timeframe
While there is no official confirmation yet, the rollout timeline can be estimated based on previous launches. OnePlus unveiled OxygenOS 16 globally in October last year. Going by that schedule, OxygenOS 17 is likely to go official around the same time this year, following the stable release of Android 17.
More clarity is expected after Google I/O 2026, when Google formally outlines the direction of its next Android version.
