Perplexity’s Comet browser is here and it changes how you browse the web

A smarter alternative to Chrome

Perplexity’s Comet browser is here and it changes how you browse the web

Perplexity announced its very own AI browser earlier this year, which set big expectations. Dubbed Perplexity Comet, the AI browser is finally here, and it’s all set to change how you browse the web.

Comet is unlike other browsers, as it’s an Agentic AI browser, which means it can browse the web and do things on your behalf. If that piques your interest, here’s everything you need to know about Comet.

What’s special about Comet?

Perplexity is levelling up your browsing experience, whilst also putting an end to Google’s dominance. Comet is an LLM-based web browser that’s powered by an in-built AI assistant. Also, since it’s an Agentic AI browser, it can search the web for you.

Based on Chromium framework, which is an open-source architecture by Google, it uses Perplexity’s ‘answer engine’. Notably, Perplexity uses foundational LLMs like OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Anthropic’s Claude 4.0 Sonnet, and its very own Sonar LLM.

Unlike Google Chrome, Comet serves you with AI-generated information about exactly what you are looking for. It doesn’t offer blue links, but rather small paras that you’d actually find helpful. The browser’s Agentic capabilities can be used by tapping on the Assistant button.

Once you summon the assistant, it brings up a sidebar with a chat interface, and from here, you can ask the assistant to complete tasks on your behalf. So, it can open travel sites and plan a trip for you, or also book tickets with simple prompts.

This is great for those who want a convenient way of browsing. While Comet looks pretty good, it’s not the only Agentic AI browser out there. Opera announced Neon sometime back, and it works exactly like Comet.

Other than being Agentic AI browsers, what’s common between the two is that they both require you to join the waitlist. And, Comet is only accessible to those with a Perplexity Max subscription. So, if you have the same subscription, or plan on getting one later, you can join Comet’s waitlist right away.
