A wider future for foldables

Samsung could be making a foldable phone with unique design to rival Apple’s first foldable

Samsung’s wide-screen foldable is said to be in development as the company prepares for Apple’s expected entry into the foldable phone segment. Recent reports suggest that both brands are exploring a wider inner display format, which could change how foldables are used for reading, browsing, and multitasking. While official confirmation is still pending, early details hint at a notable design shift.

Samsung’s wide foldable phone in works

According to a new report from South Korea, Samsung is working on a foldable smartphone featuring a wide 4:3 aspect ratio inner display. The device is expected to come with a 7.6-inch OLED folding screen, placing it close to Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone, which is said to feature a 7.58-inch inner panel.

Unlike Samsung’s existing foldables, this wider screen could offer a more tablet-like experience when unfolded. The design is described as passport-style, suggesting a broader body rather than the tall and narrow form factor seen on current Galaxy Z Fold models. This change may improve viewing comfort by reducing black bars when browsing websites, reading documents, or viewing images.

The same report claims that Samsung’s wide foldable will include a 5.4-inch cover display, again mirroring Apple’s foldable approach. Importantly, the device is not expected to replace the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Instead, it may launch alongside it in 2026, giving buyers more choice within Samsung’s premium foldable lineup.

While full specifications remain under wraps, the wide fold is expected to share hardware similarities with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. This could include a next-generation flagship Snapdragon chipset, 12GB of RAM, and support for 25W wireless charging. Current Galaxy foldables are limited to slower wireless charging speeds, so this would mark a meaningful upgrade.

With Apple expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone in September 2026, Samsung appears keen to move early. By expanding its foldable portfolio ahead of Apple’s debut, the company may aim to lock in users before competition intensifies.
