Misplaced your smartphone? The new Find My Device just made it easier

4 ways you can use the updated Find My Device on Android

Google announced a new update for its Find My Device feature on Android smartphones early this week, and it has gradually begun to roll out for smartphones running Android 9 and above.

While the new update brings the app up to speed with Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature, Google has also added a bunch of new features to make finding your misplaced Android device easier. Here’s everything it can do.

Find My Device on Android: What's new?

The Find My Device feature essentially helps you keep track of your Android devices or devices you have signed in with your primary Google account. However, with the new update, you get to try out five new ways to use the app.

1. Locating offline devices
2. Track everyday items
3. Find nearby devices
4. Share tracked items with friends

1. Locating offline devices

The app has been instrumental in tracking your smartphone when it is switched on and within the network range. However, the new update will allow users to find certain smartphones that have been switched off or have a dead battery. As per Google, this functionality, for now, will only be available for Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro users.

2. Track everyday items

Several rumours suggest an AirTag-like device could be up Google’s sleeve. However, there has been no news from Google regarding when this will be. That said, the company mentions how you can track everyday items, such as wallets or keys, using Bluetooth trackers from Chipolo, Pebblebee, eufy, Jio, and Motorola, beginning in May.

3. Find nearby devices

If you’re close to your device and need a little more help in locating it, the Find nearby feature will direct you to its whereabouts. Tapping on the feature will show the user whether or not they are close to the desired device.

4. Share tracked items with friends

If you don’t trust yourself with an accessory, the updated Find My Device will let you share it with a friend or family who can keep an eye on it for you. This means you can share your house keys with a roommate or luggage with someone you’re travelling with so you don’t have trouble finding it.

Google’s updated Find My Device is likely to see smoother integration with other third-party brands and devices; however, we may have to wait and watch for more news within the segment.
