5 common water purifier issues and how to tackle them

With steadily rising water pollution levels, water purifiers have become a common household appliance. While this humble appliance is easy on the pockets to purchase and maintain, it is also prone to the usual wear and tear. In order to not be caught unawares, here’s a little list of some common issues one may face with their water purifiers along with easy solutions.

5 common problems with water purifiers

1. Unusual taste and smell of water

Are you suddenly noticing a foul smell or taste from the water dispensed by the purifier? Chances are that there’s a biofilm accumulated in it. This is a layer of organic material collected on the surface of the water purifier. Due to this, the levels of contaminants in the water rises. The quickest solution for this is to replace any clogged filters or the membrane.

2. Leakage of water

Constant dripping of water from your purifier’s faucet may most likely be due to a worn-out O-ring, or an improperly closed valve. These soft rubber rings stop water from leaking. Needless to say, if cracked or chipping off, they need to be immediately replaced. However, if they’re not worn out, it could be a simple task of refitting them tightly.

3. Unusual noises from the purifier

Noises from a water purifier faucet, especially after replacing filters and the membrane, is likely due to excess air simply being expelled from the system. Sometimes, these noises can also be caused by sudden fluctuations and changes in the water pressure within the system. The water tank’s valve not being closed properly can also cause these sounds to emanate from one’s purifier. Consider calling a professional to check whether the tubing in the water purifier is properly installed.

4. Low flow rate of water

If water is being dispensed at a lower rate than usual, chances are the water level in your purifier is low or the pressure of the water supply itself is low. Another reason could be damage to the bladder in the water purifier. The storage tank in a water purifier contains an air bladder to help it release water quickly. If there is any leakage in the bladder, it releases water at a low pressure which leads to a lower rate of flow of water from the purifier. The filters of the purifier becoming clogged due to sediments may also cause water to be dispensed at a lower pressure than usual.

5. Water tank not filling up

Another common issue one may experience is the purifier’s storage tank not filling up completely. The primary cause for the same is often low water pressure in the purifier. An RO water purifier typically needs a minimum pressure of up to 60 PSI to operate properly. A water pump can be used to help increase the pressure, should the need for it arise. A damaged membrane could also be responsible for the tank not being filled up properly.
