How to deactivate your Instagram account

Staying connected, exploring creativity, and getting introduced to new things sometimes need a break. Maybe you’re overwhelmed with the constant doomscrolling or want to focus on real-life things.

Whatever your reason is, deactivating your Instagram account can be a good social break. But how do you do it? Don’t worry! We are here to take you through the steps on how to deactivate your Instagram account.

What happens when you deactivate your Instagram account?

Instagram allows you to deactivate the account on your smartphone, computer, or laptop. Below are a few things you need to keep in mind:

1. You can deactivate your Instagram account only once a week.

2. Your profile, pictures, stories, and posts will be hidden from others.

3. You cannot follow or unfollow people.

Deactivate the account from the Instagram app

Step 1: Go to your Instagram and click on your profile picture at the bottom right of the screen.  

Step 2: Tap on the Menu icon (Three horizontal lines).  

Step 3: In the list, select Settings and Privacy.  

Step 4: Under Settings and Privacy, select Accounts Center.  

Step 5: Go to Personal details and then Account ownership and control.  

Step 6: You will find a Deactivation or Deletion option.  

Step 7: If you have multiple accounts added, select the account that you want to deactivate.  

Step 8: Choose Deactivate Account and click on Continue. Type the password if prompted, and then click on Continue again.  

Step 9: Select a reason for deactivation and click on Continue. This will deactivate your Instagram account.

Deactivate your Instagram account from a web browser

Step 1: Go to Instagram.com in the web browser and log in to your account.  

Step 2: In the bottom left corner, you’ll find a More option; click on that.  

Step 3: From the pop-up, go to Settings, which will open a new page.  

Step 4: Go to See more in the Accounts Center, and then you will find the Personal details option.  

Step 5: Click on Personal details and select Account ownership and control.

Step 6: This will give you an option for deactivation or deletion; click on it.  

Step 7: If you have multiple accounts, choose the one you want to deactivate.  

Step 8: Then click on Deactivate account and tap on Continue.  

Step 9: Enter the password to confirm and select a reason for deactivation.  

Step 10: Confirm the deactivation process by clicking the Deactivate account option. This will deactivate your Instagram account.

These are two ways through which you can deactivate your account easily. Remember, deactivation is a temporary process, and you can reactivate your account anytime by logging back in.
