How to mount a TV on the wall: Step-by-step guide

Mounting a TV on the wall provides a cleaner setup, more room to work with, and an improved viewing experience. The process of mounting a TV is simple, and all you need to do is secure a bracket to the wall using screws and anchors, ensuring it’s fastened to the wall studs or another solid surface.

The TV attaches to the bracket, which holds the weight and keeps the screen securely in place. So, if you’re looking for a straightforward upgrade that improves both style and function, here’s how to mount your TV on the wall.

If you want a setup that looks great and functions well, here’s how to mount your TV on the wall, quickly, safely, and at the right height:

Step 1: Choose the right mount and spot

Start by picking a wall mount that fits your needs. Wall mounts come in various types, each offering its own advantages. Fixed mounts keep the TV flat against the wall and work well if you do not need to move it. Tilting mounts allow you to angle the screen up or down, which is helpful if you plan to place the TV higher. Full motion or swivel mounts provide the most flexibility as they let you pull the TV away from the wall and rotate it from side to side.

Once that’s sorted, choose your wall. Look for one with a nearby power outlet and enough room for any consoles, speakers, or extra devices. Avoid direct sunlight and high-traffic areas. If you’re not sure about the height, cut out a piece of cardboard the same size as your TV and tape it to the wall.

Step 2: Find the studs and mark everything

TVs are heavy, so you need to screw the mount into wooden wall studs and not just drywall. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your chosen area and mark their centres with a pencil.  Now hold the wall bracket up against the wall, line it up with the stud markings, and use a level to make sure it’s straight. Mark where the screws will go based on the bracket’s holes.

Step 3: Drill and install the wall bracket

Once your markings are in place, drill pilot holes into the studs where you made your marks. These small holes make it easier to drive in the screws and help prevent the wood from splitting.

Next, line up the bracket with the pilot holes and secure it using the screws or bolts that came with your mount. Tighten everything firmly and make sure the bracket is level once it’s fully attached.

Step 4: Attach the mounting plate to your TV

Lay your TV face down on a soft, flat surface like a bed or blanket. Take the mounting arms or plate that came with your wall mount and line them up with the screw holes on the back of the TV. Attach them using the provided screws, being careful not to overtighten.

Step 5: Mount the TV and clean up the setup

Now comes the final stretch. Get an extra pair of hands to lift the TV and carefully hook or slide it onto the wall bracket. Depending on the mount’s design, it might click into place or need to be locked in with screws. Once the TV is mounted, give it a gentle shake to make sure it’s secure.

At this point, plug in your devices and tidy up the cables. Turn on your TV and check the screen from different angles in the room. If you’re using a tilting or swivel mount, make a few small adjustments until you find the sweet spot.
