Optimum comfort sans the damage

How to reduce electricity bills in the summer

Residing in a tropical country means summers are endless and unbearable. And, of course, while most of us are fortunate enough to be in the shelter of our cool, air-conditioned workplace, we often find ourselves at home and seeking this relief on a sunny weekend afternoon.

But, of course, this tends to bite us back in the form of a foot-long electricity bill. So, does this mean you abandon the thought of staying comfortable in the peak of summer? What if we tell you there are smarter ways to reduce your electricity bills during this time of the year? Check out how:

5 tips to reduce electricity bill this summer season

Whether you prefer an air coolerfan or air conditioner, there are easy ways to ensure you don’t run an expensive bill at the end of the month. Here’s what you should do.

1) Switch between appliances
2) Set the temperature to an ideal level
3) Keep your space cool
4) Cut down on other appliances
5) Regular maintenance

1) Switch between appliances

Sure, it may seem ideal to run your AC and fan together, but do you really need to? If you’re the kind that requires your room to be chilling cold, run both these appliances together and gradually go ahead to switch one off once you’re comfortable. This will ensure you don’t overwork either and also keep your electricity bills in check.

2) Set the temperature to an ideal level

Setting your AC temperature at an ideal level will make sure it’s not working too hard to give you optimum comfort. Consider the outside temperature before determining what is right for you. Studies further suggest that the ideal temperature range to achieve maximum comfort along with energy efficiency is roughly between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius.

3) Keep your space cool

Your electronics work extra hard when your space is overheated. Keeping your windows and doors open in the early mornings or late evenings can ensure your home is well-ventilated and cool. Also blocking out sun rays with the right curtains can help maintain the indoor temperature of your room. Alternatively, make sure your windows and doors are sealed shut while you use your air conditioner for the cool air to circulate effectively.

4) Cut down on other appliances

Summer doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your usage. If you find yourself using your AC, fan or air cooler more than usual, it is always a good idea to balance this out by reducing any other appliance usage. For instance, a geyser or a heating rod might be rendered useless during this time of the year. Apart from this, you can even bring in lights or illumination that are power efficient and do not add to your bill.

5) Regular maintenance

Lastly, regularly maintaining your appliances will ensure they don’t work extra hard during the summer months. Keep a check on your air conditioner’s filters and get them serviced from time to time. Dirt and debris settled on your filters over time could cause your AC to strain itself and also contribute to an expensive power bill. Croma has tailored ZipCare plans for your air conditioner that you can pick while purchasing to make sure you have door-step servicing at your beck and call.

While these tips don’t work instantaneously, it is best to keep practising them from time to time for results. After all, a little effort is instrumental in going a long way — in this case, at least for the three long summer months.
