Washing white clothes without yellowing is a common challenge, but it is completely doable. Yellowing typically results from mineral buildup, detergent residue, or using the incorrect water setting. White fabrics are more prone to discolouration than coloured ones, so they need a more careful routine. Here’s how to wash white clothes in a machine without them yellowing.
Here's how to wash white clothes in washing machine
White clothes tend to lose their brightness quickly, often due to sweat, detergent residue, or improper wash settings.

But with a few simple changes, you can keep them from turning yellow. Here’s what to do:
1. Only wash whites with other whites
Mixing in colored or even light-colored clothes can lead to dye transfer, which slowly dulls your whites. Therefore, don’t mix in colours or even light pastels as they can tint your whites over time.
2. Use the right detergent
Choose a detergent that is made for white clothes or one that contains optical brighteners. Make sure you are not using too much. Extra detergent can leave behind residue that traps dirt and causes yellowing.
3. Wash in hot water if the fabric allows it
Hot water helps break down sweat, body oils, and leftover detergent more effectively. However, always check the care label first. Cotton usually handles hot water well, but delicate fabrics may shrink or get damaged.
4. Add either baking soda or vinegar as a booste
Baking soda helps brighten and deodorise. Add half a cup directly into the drum. Alternatively, you can even use white vinegar in the rinse cycle to break down residue and soften fabric. However, use only one of these at a time. Using both together cancels out their effects.
5. Avoid fabric softener and don’t overload
Fabric softener leaves a coating that builds up over time and causes yellowing. If you want softness, vinegar is a better alternative. Additionally, do not overload the washing machine. Clothes need room to move around and rinse properly. If they are packed too tightly, detergent can get trapped and cause stains.

6. Dry clothes the right way
Drying clothes in sunlight helps because the ultraviolet rays naturally bleach and brighten fabric. If you are using a dryer, make sure the clothes are completely dry before you store them. Damp fabric can develop musty smells and yellow stains.
Lastly, if your whites are already looking dull, soak them in warm water with baking soda and a splash of hydrogen peroxide before washing. Avoid using bleach too often as it can actually cause yellowing over time.
