Over 100 new emojis likely to come to your smartphones by early next year

Today, emojis are used the world over, to convey and express emotions, ideas and opinions alike. Besides expression, emojis also help save precious time and space, helping make texts concise and clear.

Every year, these little forms of expression are celebrated on July 17, which happens to be World Emoji Day. Keeping the same in mind, Emojipedia, the entity that is credited with designing the emojis we know and love so much, has dropped a preview of the new emojis which are likely to come to Android and iOS devices later this year, or early next year. These new emojis will be part of the Emoji 15.1 update.

What's new in Emoji 15.1?

Some of the latest emojis previewed in Emoji 15.1 include a lime emoji, a head moving side-to-side to signify ‘no’, and one moving vertically to signify ‘yes’. Others include a Phoenix bird, a broken chain, and a mushroom. Also included are four gender-neutral family emojis.

Besides this, Emoji 15.1 also includes a change in the direction, about 108 different emoji characters can face. That means these emojis, which currently face left, could potentially gain the ability to face toward the right in the near future.

The list of potential new emojis, as part of the Emoji 15.1, also expands when one considers the different subtypes, such as different genders and skin tones, included in the same.

By when can you expect to see these emojis on your devices?

Bear in mind, the emojis one sees as part of this preview are not set in stone. These samples, created by Emojipedia, are pitched to companies such as Apple and Google for newer versions of their proprietary operating systems. It is then up to them whether to accept or reject them or make design changes to them and incorporate the same.

Eventually, these emojis are released for use to the public as an over-the-air (OTA) software update. However, these updates are not always immediate in nature.

Emoji 15.1 for example, at least in the case of iOS devices, is not expected to be released until the spring of 2024, bearing in mind how Apple just updated its emojis in March this year, as part of the iOS 16.4 update. The new Emoji 15.1 update then, may not be a part of iOS 17 upon release, which is scheduled sometime for the fall this year.
