Should you charge your PlayStation controller overnight? Here’s what you need to know

It’s a common habit to plug-in gadgets and leave them for charging overnight. If you own a gaming console, you might have put the controller to charge till morning after a late-night session.

Sony’s DualSense battery is rated at 1,560mAh for longer gaming and smarter charging means that it automatically stops drawing power once the battery reaches 100 per cent. While overnight charging isn’t a risk anymore, in most cases, the battery health could take a hit and you are required to replace it to make the device function properly.

What really happens when you leave DualSense to charge overnight

The DualSense controller is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that’s found on smartphones, laptops, and wireless earbuds. These have two main downsides—extreme heat and always topping the device to 100 per cent. The sweet spot is to maintain the battery on the PlayStation controller and most lithium-ion powered devices between 20 to 80 per cent.

While overcharge protection cuts off the current, there’s a catch to it. Once the battery hits 100 per cent, the device switches to trickle charging. In simple terms, when the battery discharges slightly, the circuit kicks back in to top it up to 100 per cent again.

This cycle keeps repeating if the controller is left to charge overnight. It puts a strain on the lithium-ion battery if it’s pinned near 100 per cent capacity constantly. Overnight charging also increases the risk of overheating if the controller isn’t in a well ventilated place. This rapidly degrades long-term battery health.

For the longevity of the DualSense controller, it’s advisable to charge it during the day or in shorter bursts. You can also top it up by plugging into the PS5 while playing games. Sony also offers a charging dock that features dedicated contact pins and works in tandem with the controller’s built-in battery management ensuring efficient trickle charging.

Charging the DualSense controller occasionally overnight won’t ruin its battery but doing it every single night for prolonged periods will definitely shorten the battery life. A small habit shift goes a long way.
